Mikel Arteta shouldered the blame for Arsenal's painful 3-1
Carabao Cup defeat against West Ham. The Gunners' manager implemented six
changes to his starting lineup for the fourth-round match, notably beginning
with Declan Rice on the bench in his return to the Hammers.
Rice, who had previously captained West Ham and secured the
Europa Conference League trophy last season, was back at his former club for
the first time following his £105 million transfer to Arsenal. However, he
won't be hoisting the Carabao Cup this season, as goals from Mohammed Kudus and
Jarrod Bowen, along with an early own goal by Ben White, led to Arsenal's
elimination from the competition.
Arteta took responsibility for the outcome, stating,
"I'm very disappointed. I'm responsible for that, and we're now out of the
cup. Our intention was to play a completely different style of game and to be
competitive." He continued, "The match took a different turn due to
the first goal, but we should have seen more from the team and fought for the
victory."
The Arsenal manager expressed his disappointment in himself
and the team's performance, emphasizing the importance of learning from this
loss. He concluded, "Every time we suffer a defeat, the pain is evident.
We must use this pain and setback to prepare effectively for our upcoming match
against Newcastle on Saturday."
